Hell Let Loose Vietnam Classes & Roles: All 19 Roles Explained

Every role in Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — the 19-role system, squad structure, commander play, which class to pick first and how roles differ from the WWII game.

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam ships with 19 specialised roles (official launch count) organised into infantry, armour, air and command structures. The role system is the series’ backbone: your role defines your weapons, equipment and your actual job in the 50-player team. Last updated: August 14, 2026.

How the role system works

  • Squads are role-gated: one officer per squad, limited special roles (MG, AT, sniper), unlimited core roles (rifleman/assault).
  • Your role level unlocks loadout variants within the role — playing medic levels medic, not your sniper.
  • Some roles exist only in specific squad types: helicopter crews, boat crews and armour crews form their own units, and one player per side runs Commander.

The role families

(The full 19-role table with per-faction loadouts is being verified in-game and filled role by role — not guessed.)

Which role first?

  1. Rifleman — full kit, no squad-slot pressure, teaches the map flow. The beginner guide starts here.
  2. Medic — highest team value per skill required; jungle fights produce dense revive opportunities.
  3. Support — supplies for officer garrisons make you every squad’s favourite player.

Avoid on day one: Officer (you are the squad’s spawn point — learn the game first), helicopter pilot (practice controls before carrying six passengers: flight guide), Commander.

Vietnam-specific role notes

  • The asymmetric factions mean the same role plays differently per side — a VC engineer’s tunnel work has no direct US equivalent (tunnels, factions).
  • Voice discipline matters more than the WWII game: push-to-talk setup is basically mandatory (settings).
